If you’re a low-budget filmmaker who can’t afford to hire a graphic artist (like myself), then I think it’s hugely important that we understand the parallels between graphic design and filmmaking.

HOW I MADE THE GRAPHICS IN THE VIDEO:

free1

To get the white outline, duplicate the text layer. Right click on the bottom layer, and choose “Alpha to Selection”. Then go to Select > Grow…

free2

Drop Shadows were very important in this image. Duplicate the layer, then right click > “Alpha to Selection”. Edit > Fill with FG Colour. Then Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Finally, move the layer slightly, and reduce the opacity of that layer to about 30%

tips

Left: Text, basic font. Middle: With fonts. Right: With simple shapes.

scoot2

Simple image with a purple circle, at 50% Opacity.

With Text and Drop shadows.

scoot5

With Grain, and vignette.

Hi, in your latest video about grafikdesign you had that picture: VISUAL STORY TELLING MUSCLE . Did you made that man completly yourself in gimp or did you changed an image from the internet ?

    • I made it on GIMP, but I did have a reference image to help me get the general shape.

  • Awesome! I have been looking at your videos and I’ve learned a lot. Thank you for sharing this stuff, it makes it a lot less intimidating to learn.

    • That’s very encouraging to hear, you’re welcome Marcos!

How did you create the banner shape in the “There is no need for professionals… “?
